The Deadline: Chapters 3, 4 & 5

On the third chapter Mr T. woke in a place that seemed to be his apartment, in which it was also Lahska waiting for him, she seemed kind of stalker as she knew every single detail of his life, like the name of his cat. Mt T. discussed with Lahska about his kidnapping, why was he there and what they wanted from him.

At first he was denying everything of what Lahska told him, he even said what would happen if he declined the job, and Lahska politely said he would be back home with all his stuff and with some money, and then Lahska told him that if he agreed on the offering, he would have double his salary.

At this point Mr T. was kind of on board, but he had trouble trusting Lahska. After she demonstrated him that she was trustworthy, he came on board and started thinking of everything he needed to start the project, asking for tons of people to work and a lot of last gen equipment, here was the first important part of the management, team building, but he didn’t have in mind that he was asking for way too many resources for the projects that were given to him.

On the fourth chapter Lahska approached Mr T. shyly, she handed over a present to Mr T. which was a leathered-cover book, with the title “Personal Journal of Webster Tatterstall Tompkins”, which was a book of everything that he had learned over the years, and here they mention the four most important things on team management.

  • Get the right people
  • Match them to the right jobs
  • Keep them motivated
  • Help their teams to jell and stay jelled

And then there was a little joke/reference which was “All the rest is Administrivia”.

After that Mr T. met his new assistant, Waldo, he was a little guy Tin Tin lookalike, as he was very thin. Surprisingly he is very, VERY efficient, even if he looked sleepy.

In this chapter the most important thing is that Mr T. tells us that change is the thing the people is more afraid to do.

With the person who he had to talk to didn’t want to make any changes to the design to avoid anyone telling him that it was wrong, he preffered to stay low profile, just making the minimum effort to complete the task, and if anyone decided to make a change, the fault would be theirs.

At the end, Mr T. forced this guy to make the changes he told him to do, that he would be responsible if anyone disliked the changes. Then Mr T. made a list telling that people would not change, only if they felt safe, and this is fatal as it is holding you back.

At the beggining of chapter 5 Mr T. was travelling on a train, he was making emphasis that he was really calm as he knew Morovia needed him, he was going to see someone really important, as he checked in on the reception and there were guards.

This mysterious lady, named Miss Lane had a very good english, se walked him to a room with a lot of furniture and there he saw a man, typing on a computer. He seemed familiar to Mr T. but as soon as he tried to tell the mysterious man, he stopped him, telling him not to jump on conclusions.

In the room, one of the conditions were not to talk to anyone about what he saw in there. On the conversation trying to break the ice, Mr T. started asking questions to the man to know a little bit more about him, to one question he answered that he was a tyrant. Mr T. didn’t react the same way I would, I would be shocked, but Mr T. starting asking more questions.

In there Mr T. discovered that this guy bought Morovia, that’s the reason he considered himself a tyrant. He started telling him that he bought the country because the system was a mess, loops where you couldn’t scape from, so he made a few switches with the stock and he ended up getting Morovia.

He didn’t like people telling him no, that the ideas he liked to see weren’t possible, so that’s the other reason why he became a tyrant, to stop people from telling him no. And he narrated a story about a guy who, even when he was a tyrant, this dude would still say no, and he started thinking if he needed someone to chop his head off, to maintain the discipline on the others, to give them the message. someone to be de sacrificial lamb.

This is one of the most important points on this chapter. There are many types of leaders, but in my opinion there are two that stand out the most: The ones that help their workers to go forward, and the ones that don’t know how to controll their team, and they use fear as their motivation.

Then they started discussing about what product they could launch to keepo the market stocks up. This person told Mr T. that they would create an product identical to one existing, that there won’t be any legal problems, as the code is the one with the copyright, and they would do that from scratch.

Then they discussed about how they were going to make money out of it as it would be free, but this man had a plan, he just told Mr T. to give him the product.
